1. distribute and combine like terms:
12x+24 = 17 + 7x
2. bring all x's to one side
12x + 24 = 17 + 7x
-7x - 24 = -24 - 7x
3. solve
5x = 7
4. divide both sides by 5.
x = 7/5

4(3x+6)=12+3x+5+4x
4*3x + 4*6 = 12 + 3x + 5 + 4x Distribute.
12x + 24 = 12 + 3x + 5 + 4x Simplify.
12x + 24 = 7x + 17 Combine Like terms.
12x + 24 - 7x = 7x + 17 -7x Subtract 7x from both sides.
5x + 24 = 17 Simplify.
5x + 24 - 24 = 17 - 24 Subtract 24 from both sides.
5x = -7 Simplify.
5x/5 = -7/5 Divide both sides by 5
x = -7/5 or -1.4

all x's on one side, whole numbers on the other

5x = -7
x = -7/5

um im addressing the person who asked this question (the additional details):

i'm pretty sure that my answer is right and that x does not equal 1
and though we al know that 24 is 24, i do not see why it is relevant for this problem.
