I have a 2003 mazda tribute and one day I noticed my rpm needle and my speedometer both float to the far right the speedometer went as high up as 100 the rpm also. It occurs simultaneously. I had it checked out they told me they couldn't find anything. I still have it happen from time to time but I am starting to worry that I may have transmission problems, I use to think it happened because I had the air conditioning on and the car was pulling then I realized there were times I was on level ground, also it would then float all the way to the left I didn't increase speed or loose speed the needles would just go crazy. Mazda told me that the weight of my keys in the ignition could be doing it, I don't have alot of keys on the ring. Help please I am ready to trade the car in, it has only 48,000 miles. Today when it happened it started to jerk as I was going up a slight hill.

There are two separate issues here. First, is the instrument cluster. There are a couple of fixes, one involves a reprogram, the other involves replacement of the cluster. The dealer will know by the codes in the IC module which one needs to be done. The other issue sounds like a transmission shudder or a misfire under load. One involves flushing the trans fluid, because moisture in the fluid will cause torque convertor shudder when shifting into o/d, the other may be simply a misfire, which should set a code in the computer that the dealer can retrieve and then fix the problem.

It sounds like the two problems are linked.
Your dealer should be able to extract the codes.
Maybe you have a faulty transmition control module that is giving an intermittant fault.
