there is a bird nest in a tree in my backyard with 2 baby birds in it. i dont have any problem with that, but every time i try to go in my backyard the mother bird gets mad and swoops down and tries to hit me. i know that it is just being protective, but i would like to know how long this "protective stage" going to last and when i can go into my backyard again without being attacked

If you can see the kids, or hear them, then you've probably only got another week or so to go - those kids will be out of the nest before you know it, and very likely hopping around on the ground before they can really fly well. Hang in there, and be glad it's not Mockingbirds - they can really whack you good.

It would really matter on the type of bird. Also, that mother seems very protective as to swoop down and try to attack you.

There is no real way to determine the exact time, but I'd say about 2-3 weeks at most.

Good luck, and have fun watching those babies grow! :]

It depends what kind of bird it is, but I would say 2-3 weeks from the time they hatched. Some people wear helmets when they mow their lawns.
