you can't really compare the book to the musical. they're both great. basically, with the book, you get a lot more twists, plot, and just story. it's not a happy-go-lucky ending like the musical, but it's a great read. a bit slow to get through in the beginning is all. the musical is a lot more fun to watch, but i think you should try the book just for kicks. you can always put it down, not like in the musical, where you can't walk out halfway [not that you'd want to it's awesome!]

I read the book way before they made it into a musical. I did enjoy the book when I first read it, but I don't think I fully grasped it until the second time I read it about a year later. It's really great, I haven't seen the musical yet, but I did read the sequel called "Son of a Witch," which is also kind of freaky like "Wicked" the book, but good, in an appreciative sense of literature.

OMG!! I have read a lot of crazy stuff--I'll read just about anything I can get my hands on--but I have never read anything that is as messed up as this book was. The Wizard of Oz is my all time favorite movie and I was kinda excited when I heard that there was this "new" book out there that was about that story. Then I made the mistake of going and buying the friggin thing. I would not recommend this book to anyone. It was just way to hard to get into but the first several chapters that I did read were really strange and had a lot of totally freaky parts to it. So unless you're really into completely jacked up story lines I would skip this book.

To be honest, I thought the musical was way better than the book. The book had just too much in it, the musical was much more streamlined, and I like the way the musical connected the characters and ended much better too. I would definately choose seeing the musical over reading the book.

The book was interesting, but not spellbinding. It plodded in spots. The author did a good job of building a credible story for the topic, but I wouldn't read it again.
If you really loved the musical, then I'd say get it and read it. You'll get a lot of questions answered about why they did this and that, things that you simply can't fit in a stage play or movie without making it 37 hours long. If you ever read any of the Lord of the Rings books, and saw the movies, you'll know what I mean.

Yes, yes, yes! I loved it. The sequel, Son of a Witch, is also excellent. Keep in mind I did not see the musical. Also, the movie, The Wizard of Oz, has very little resemblance to the original Oz books or to Wicked.

I read the book and liked it, but I've never seen the musical. The story is...odd and the book is a bit slow but it's interesting and I would recommend it or any of the similar books by Gregory Maguire. He re-wrote several fairy tales from different characters' point of view. It's an interesting concept.

It was OK, and it's definitely something to read if you want to be "pop culturally literate." But I found it kind of hard to understand -- I felt like there were soooo many references to the REAL Wizard of Oz books. I read those as a kid, and forgot most of the stories, so it was kind of a slog.
I liked "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" much better. Cinderella is a much more accessible story for most of us, and he wove in this really cool parallel to The Girl with the Pearl Earring.
If you read the book, I'd recommend reading the Wizard of Oz books first. It might make a more enjoyable reading experience.

The book is not like the musical. I personally found the book very dull and hard to get into. A lot of people who enjoyed the musical were very disappointed in the book. I was. Pax- C

Personally, i love this book!!!! it does start to get dull in some parts, but it doesn't really detract from the overall story. there are differences between the book and the musical but there both still great! i definetly recommend it.
