I have a 10" compound miter saw and I am wondering if you can buy a blade and make it into a cut off saw or if there is a way to convert it. Also- can a miter saw cut metal pipes?

A miter saw is a cut off saw, just keep it set at 90 Degrees.
Yes you can use it to cut metalpipes if you buy a metal cutting blade for it.

If you elect to use your, probably very nice compound miter saw as a cut off saw, do be prepared to watch the plastic parts at the back of your saw MELT.
Of course, what i mean is, don't do it. A cut off saw is straight cuts in metal and, a compound miter saw is for cutting compound angles in wood. Two significantly different saws for two significantly different kinds of work.
Honestly, some of the answers I've read here absolutely reek a lack of any real experience.

Check the RPMs on your miter saw.

The cutoff blades we use to cut metal are 14", not sure if they come smaller.

You need a certain amount of RPMs to spin the abrasive blade in order to cut through the metal. The blade basically grinds and melts the metal. The required RPMs are written on the label on the cutoff blades.

No, I don't think that you can because you usually have an area which sprays water onto where you are cutting and a regular miter saw would not have that...It should be in your manual for the miter saw if you could convert it.

What a bizarre and potentially lethal idea. Buy a cut off saw.

Real carpenters tend to respect their equipment and use proper caution when operating power tools. But i would have to say the most likely scenario would be a table saw. I have to say that most people I know that have had hand injuries from one of these particular tools has been the table saw, but I have to point out that pretty much most of them were dumb enough to operate power tools while drinking or doing drugs. Not to mention extreme lack of common sense sometimes plays a large role.

With the right blade you can cut metal and are easy to find, look in any home center.
