Contractions feel like menstrual cramps and they grow in intensity as the hours go on. Your uterus and tummy will tighten, hold for a while and then relax. In early labor this will happen every 10 minutes or so but then they will get more frequent and more painful.
At the very end, after you transition, the contractions are very painful and powerful because they are helping to push the baby out. I was screaming at the end because it was so intense!

Braxton Hicks, False or Practice Labor Contractions:-
These contractions can be described as a tightening of the abdominal area
Usually are irregular and short
Not painful though - just uncomfortable
Do not get longer, stronger, or closer together
Can last several minutes in length
Walking does not make them stronger, may even cause them to stop
Lying down may make them go away
May be felt more in the front area and in the groin area
Or contractions begin in the back, but they do not move to the front
Beneficial in preparation for true labor
Cervix - Very little change or no change; does not thin or open
True Labor Contractions :-
May be irregular at first and usually become regular
Get longer, stronger, and closer together as time progresses
Walking usually makes them stronger
Lying down does not make them go away
Contractions begin at the cervix, move up and around to the back
Often they begin in your back and move to the front
Cervix - Changes by becoming thinner and starts to open (dilates)
Good luck

the very beginning stages of labor is just a tightening/hardening of your tummy/uterus. It doesn't really hurt. Then they feel like period cramps or when you have to have a BM. Then they get more painful. I know this is hard to hear, but you will KNOW when you are having contractions and are in labor. Its a pain and feeling like NO OTHER. I don't mean that its scary, but you just get the "feeling" that "this is it". And when they get more intense and closer together you also will know its real. If they go away after a walk and drink of water, its braxton hicks.

i am almost 39 weeks pregnant and been having contractions over a week, i went to the doctor today, they couldnt believe my contractions and i wasnt in more pain, i am having i guess braxton hicks right now, it feels like my whole stomach hardens into this hard ball and it even feels hard to the touch, it gets really tight and hard and feels like a lot of pressure on your belly, then it slowly eases up and goes away after about a minute, when the real ones come, it just feels like im going to start my period and i get the tightening and like a wave of ain through my stomach and the intensity gets worse and worse and then eventually starts to ease up, i havent felt the worse of it yet, they think i will go in labor very soon though, even tonight they said, i hope so! good luck

It feels really hard. Your whole stomach gets hard as a rock and depending on if they are just braxton hixs contractions or real contractions determines the pain. Real contractions are continuous and feel like a really strong menstrual cramp, the other just kinda feels like your stomach is rising and has no pain.

you'll start cramping low, and by the time baby is due, you be in so much pain you won't care about your uterus or anything else for that matter. Dare ya to have it natural. I did. Hurt like hell, but boy it was worth it. Twice.

contractions feel like someone clamping down on your uterus until you beg for relief and it goes on and they get closer and closer each time it hurts so bad there is no explanation of the pain.

It feels like cramps but 100 times worse! It kind of feels like someone is scraping your insides with a knife. Something to look forward to huh? Sorry, but its the truth!

I don't know for sure, but my mother always described it feeling like really really needing to take a poo. You'd better call a doctor- better safe then sorry.
