Sometimes the fans are running but you only get a black screen. Before you conclude motherboard failure, try running a bare minimum PC. That means disconnected hard drive, CD drive and FDD, just 1 stick RAM and only integrated graphics if possible. Also try unscrewing motherboard from its mounting such that it is not touching any metal part of the case. With this set up, you should at least enter BIOS menu if motherboard is OK. If it is still a black screen, probably, mobo is dead.

Well, there are at least 2 kinds of m-board failures,

1. The board is completely toast and will not boot ..no matter what components you change. However..it can take considerable time and swapping of components to prove this...and as we all know..its impossible to prove a negative!

2 Or..some components on the board itself are bad..such as blown capacitors ( bulging...obvious leaks)..or a short circuit...or an open in some component.
Its still possible for the board to P.O.S.T , even run for a while...however it might quit unexpectedly..or work unpredictably/unreliably.
If you have a board like 2...get another one asap. It's possible to repair...but how do you ever really know that the cause of the problem is now fixed? For example..the blown capacitor is a SYMPTOM of the problem...not the problem itself.

An old motherboard will lag and always hang itself, whereby you have to keep on restart it by force( unplug it ).
