My friend,
Help the children. Provide vaccinations, clothes and playgrounds. Give the children a chance at childhood, then the adults will follow. Whenever, a country helps the children, it stands the best chance to gain return on the dollar, and develops a reservoir of goodwill. Everyone has children and they want the best for them, because it is the country's future. Make this the center of your cause to eradicate poverty and you will better be able to defend your thesis.

Supporting Africa financially will not end poverty, that's true. I don't mean that they can't use some help. Poverty in Africa is mainly caused by war and dictatorships that keep people from working to support themselves. Many are driven from their homes, while others are deprived of the knowledge and technology that could make them prosperous.
For instance in Darfur, the government-backed paramilitaries are attacking the locals and driving them from their homes, making them refugees, and killing many. If these people were left in peace, they could survive; with improved technology, they could prosper.
Since the problems have political causes, it is very difficult to help. Often, when there is a local disaster, aid cannot be delivered because enemies of the victims prevent it.
Should the US get more involved in the politics of Africa? Bush just announced we are putting more pressure on Sudan to protect the people of Darfur.
The US really is not capable of rectifying all the injustices perpetrated in Africa by African bad guys. We probably will have our hands full in the next 2 decades, fighting Islamist expansionism. Part of this conflict will be fought in Africa, since Islam is a major religion there, and no doubt the US will have a part in it.
I have hope that in 20 years or so, when the world-wide conflict has been settled, the situation in Africa will also be better.

A good way to go with your speech is that money isn't the only thing that is needed.
People must volunteer to help out in Africa.
Like the person above said, anyone who gets money will just pocket it.
Yes, money is good, but you should really get people into actually helping out in that continent.
People need to go over there and build schools, houses, churches, and then people in that region will see what true love is and stop the fighting and start promoting peace.

My debate on that is what prove or evidence is there that we don't have enough money?
All we need to do is educate the people on how they can build a society to support themselves. If you have enough of a community built over time they should be ablet to sustain.
The problem is the leaders perpetuate the economics so that they can continue to be the leaders.

the usa does not have enough money to just end poverty in africa. africa is huge the only way to try and get them out of poverty is to teach them to sustain themselves such as giving animals and not just food. giving them seeds that you can use again making them sustainable. think if america were to give 10,000 cows to africa (hardly anything for america) they would breed over around 10 years and turn into 10s of millions of cows. in my opinion this general idea is the best solution.

My 86 years old aunt was telling me how they use to collect pennies for the poor African children in her school in England when she was little. This was about 80 years ago, they were trying to solve that problem back then and it still isn't solved.

It seems that just about every method of eradicating poverty in Africa has been tried EXCEPT for free-market capitalism.

Kick out all the corrupt governments that pocket the foreign aid money and support ethnic cleansing.
