Platty owner for 10 years here. Once born, the babies are in danger of being eaten by the adult fish, and will seek places to hide. Between the small leaves of aquatic plants are good spots to hide and are hard for the adult fish to penetrate. You don't have to buy live plants; there are very lifelike artificial ones available at aquarium stores that can be easily removed after the babies have grown. It's a good idea to keep plants with your fish anyway, as it helps keep their stress and agression down.

well, plants are excellent hiding spots for the fries, 'cause the adults would eat 'em.
don't take 'em out of the tank, usually it'll stress the fries and kill 'em!

do what i do, i put lots of plants in my platy pond, well, in one area is dense for hiding center, and the rest would be with tiny little plants, so that i can still see them. another optional hiding place would be rocks and hollow pots. and with only that, my platies had crowded the pond!
it's very succesful!

good luck

There should be plants so the babies can hide, and the other fish don't eat them.

when you move fry there is always the chance of harming them because they are so small. if you are good at it then keep doing what you are doing.

many people do it the other way -- remove the mom and leave the babies in a tank with plants.
