It's largely an ideological rhetorical device to get people excited to vote against liberals. Liberals do the same to conservatives by calling them fascists. Both statements are equally incorrect and ignorant. But, it doesn't stop people from levelling those charges because they know it will motivate supporters and antagonioze the opposition. If they are responding to these charges, then they are not extolling the virtues about themselves. So, it throws political opponents off their game since they are left having to defend themselves.

It really depends if you mean classic liberals or contemporary ones.
Classic liberalism is liberty with the respect of the individual which would probably fit most Americans up to the time of the New Deal.
The more modern form of liberalism is much like socialism because of the dependence on the government being the solver of all problems.

Those of us on the far left, or the ultra-liberals want total equality. We want every human to reach their full potential. We want a complete separation of church and state. We want equal protection under the law. Da Da Da. We believe the government should intervene when the greedy capitalists are exploiting the poor and middle classed as they usually do. The government can play a big role in providing education, slowing inflation and helping the nation achieve full employment. Socialists are a bit to the right because they are a bit lenient to the free market. They are the modern day progressives.

Socialists want complete government control over its citizens lives. To me socialists and communists want the same thing.
Liberals believe in big government, control over our lives, income redistribution, and the like.
The two have the same goals. They are anti-freedom and anti-American. Read the Constitution literally and understand where the founders were coming from.
If the founders were alive today, they would be angry how pathetic this country has become.

I would like to explain this very clearly for you, but you are going to have to read and then come back and deny the facts.
http://www.sovereignty.net/center/socialists.htm
these are members of the international socialists party, they are who control and lead your party, as well as George Soros who owns the Democratic Secular Socialists.
some explanation of what you are trying to do.
http://jb-williams.com/11-03-06.htm
and a more clear picture of the evil you represent
http://jb-williams.com/communism.html
Now if you do not want to be labeled as a socialists or communist then you are going to have to rid your party of them. There are no more classical liberals in the democratic party, they are commies hiding behind a label.
Get rid of the socialists, only you guys can do it, and guess what AMerica will stop calling you socialists, pretty easy isn't it.

It's because they want bigger government, socialized medicine and a redistribution of wealth, which are all socialist traits.
Plus, they focus upon every little, nit-picky negative thing about our present system of government that they could possibly ever come up with and once they trash that issue, they go on to something else.
They appear to never be happy with any facet of this country, as though they are in an eternal state of protest. AND it does appear to be VERY un-American.
So, we feel we can't trust them. We fear that going with socialized medicine will only lead to more and more changes to our core system of government and because this is (and has been for the better part of the last century) the greatest country on earth, we fear losing it if we give in to even one change.
Because the libs are, as I said, never happy and, as I said, will only start their protest over about something else.

I could be wrong on this but I have heard that before many times and do believe that it has merits.. The reason is that the liberals(mostly all Demcrats) want the Government to do everything for the people.... as in Socialist countries

It's got to do with wanting the government to take care of everyone from the womb to the tomb. Socialized medicine, minimum wage, welfare, etc. And with the basic tenet of socialism/communism, to each according to his need from each according to his ability -- tax the "rich" and give to the poor.
This "land of opportunity" is not a playing field to be leveled. It's a place where one can work hard and hope to improve his lot in life -- his and that of his children.
Some liberals are extremely leftwing, just as they claim some conservatives are extremely right wing. The difference is, the extreme leftwing is slowly transforming us from a democracy to a social democracy, and thereafter comes socialism.

Liberals want a bigger government and then have everything for the citizens coming directly from the government. To me, that's socialism. The government decides what you get, how much you get and they pay no attention to individual differences or ambition. To liberal, those not in the government are all the same.

"Many of you are well enough off that ... the tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good." (Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton - June 28, 2004, in San Francisco at a Democrat Party fundraiser)
"I want to take those profits and put them into an alternative energy fund that will begin to fund alternative smart energy alternatives that will actually begin to move us toward the direction of independence." (Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton - February 2, 2007, at DNC Winter Meeting - regarding profits earned by oil companies, which are not [yet] owned by the government)
"As president I know I can't kill, jail or occupy every nation we don't agree with and I cannot just wish that all the terrorists be wiped off the face of the Earth" (Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton - February 10, 2007, at a campaign appearance in New Hampshire)
"We're going to change the way we finance the system by taking away money from people who are doing well now" — (Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton — March 24, 2007, at a health care forum in Las Vegas)
