I personally agree with you that the age of adulthood should be the age of adulthood... period. But that also means that a defense of bad actions on the basis of "oh, I was just a stupid kid in college" or "oh, I was only 18" should be thrown out also.
Perhaps the age for EVERYTHING should be 21.

Here in Australia we can gamble, drink, vote, get a licence driving or otherwise and die for our country if needed. Is it right? Like all things, it relies on the individual and their level of maturity and sense of responsibility. I know 18 year olds who are responsible and mature young people. I know others from 18 to 58 who have no idea of what being responsible means. So where do we set the 'adult' benchmark? Usually by the voting public and their general consensus.
Life experience and how we manage it is what seperates the adult from the rest and it is not always reliant on age as I said.
Studies coming out are showing the brain is still developing into the 20's where it had been thought it was fully developed by age 15. What this means is that the earlier we put chemicals such as alcohol into our system we are interfering with the brain's development and can even cause permanent damage. Alcohol overload can not only cause death it can cause Acquired Brain Injury. These are the stories not told as it may interfere with Organisational sales plans, profits.
Enjoy being where you are in this space and time, being a 'fully fledged' adult is not always what it is cracked up to be.
Gambling only leaves you broke and talking about your wins only, lol, personal experience on this.

You can gamble on Indian Reservations if you're 18, but not in regular casinos. And the people who serve our country are allowed to drink if they're under 21. So yes, those that do go to war can drink, those that don't can't. And the reason they probably made the drinking/gambling age 21 is because the two can lead to pretty serious addictions and problems. They probably don't think most 18 year olds can handle it. Don't feel bad though, I'm 23 and I can't even rent a car yet. In my state you have to be 24. As if at that age you miraculously gain driving abilities. :T

Look at these people who think the government should control your life. Of course you should be able to drink and gamble at 18. Not only can you join the army at 18 but you can also own a gun at 18. But you can't go to a casino to play poker or go to a bar to have a beer. That is completely ridiculous. Also, not everyone who gambles and drinks becomes an addict. At 18, you are an adult and you should be able to drink. Apparently, these people trust you to go to Iraq and fight in war, but they don't trust you with a beer. Talk about hypocritical, especially since the majority of these folks drank well before they were 21.

Not really. You aren't old enough to 'die in a war' at 18 considering how long boot camp and tech schools can take. Sometimes a year or more...and that doesn't even get into all of the training specific to the war you're going into.
Nobody goes to war 'right after' they get out of bootcamp. The military doesn't work that way.
As a parent, as far as I'm concerned you can't be responsible for picking up your socks off your bedroom floor at 18.
Why in the world would I entrust you with mind altering chemicals or money that..at first thought you would gamble away instead putting in a mutual fund?
are you kidding?

My thought is if you can vote, and can die for your country, you should be allowed to drink and gamble.
How about this - if you are under 21 and in the military, then you can drink and gamble. There - now it is all fair.

Poor guy! You have to wait three years before you kill your brain cells. The increased drinking age came about due to the numerous problems that came about when younger people were allowed to drink.

Sure. But if you're drinking at 18, you shouldn't be able to drive until you're 21.

no at 18. one has not experienced life enough to make life's decisions. at that age one wants badly to be independant but that have not experienced enough of like to make a informed decision.they can be a very honest and good kid. they have nothing in their live to fall back on to help them make decisions.when one gets older they realize that waiting was the right thing

They used to allow drinking at 18 in NY.
More kids died on the roads drunk than in Iraq.
P.S. Before you can drink at least learn how to spell.
Dopey Kid!
