No real question, just your opinion. I purchased an 11 dvd set of Akira Kurosawa's film. I'm about half way thru and just totally blown away. I had seen some of his work and knew he was good, but seeing them again is fantastic. I think he is among the best, Ford, Hitchcock, Kubrick all the best. Opinions please

Indeed, one of the greatest in my opinion. If the 11 DVD box set that you got is the ubiquitous red Chinese one, however, I would strongly recommend getting versions of those films with proper transfers (and subtitles). The films get that much better when seen from proper DVDs.

I would also suggest digging into Kurosawa's early career. There are some real gems there that are unfortunately often overlooked by both critics and the general film watching population.

And by the way, if you are interested in Kurosawa, do check out http://akirakurosawa.info/ and let me know what you think. :)

Are you talking about The Seven Samaurai .I seen it years ago when I was a small Boy it was Brilliant,It was in Japanese with English Subtitles. The Magnificent Seven Series of Pictures was Based on it. I only ever saw it once and would like to see it again sometime. I thoroughly recommend anyone to look at it very Bloodthirsty loads of Swordfights and a very good Storyline.

The man was pure genius. So much of his original work was taken by Western Directors. Hidden Empire was blatantly ripped off for George Lucas in the creation of Star Wars.
The Seven Samurai was turned into the Magnificent Seven.

He was the first Director to come up with a way to capture the Sun on film in the Movie Rashoman. Rashoman is still used as a Police Training tool for witness interrogation. When a witness recounts things they tend to put things in the best light for them... this is referred to as the Rashoman Effect.

He was WAY before his time.

I have enjoyed every film by Akira Kurosawa that I watched.
In particular, 'Dersu Uzala', 'Stray Dog', 'Ikiru', and yes - the Samurai films too. The last one I saw was 'Madadayo' - the title roughly translates into "Aren't you dead yet?"

Yes, Kurosawa's work is excellent. Have you seen Ran yet? It is very well done.

Tremendous, but no one beats Ingmar Bergman
