The Soviet's beat us into space with both the Satelite and Man. We beat them to the moon just before their economy colappsed. The U.S. was the first and only nation to land on the moon up until recently. (England did it)

The Soviets launched the first UNmaned space craft named Sputnik. The US was the first to send a man into space and also to reach the moon.
