Whenever people say "Aww", when they look at a picture of a baby cat or a cute looking rabbit, why do they say that? I mean, I think my cats are completely adorable, but I'm not even sure why. Any ideas?

I agree with many of the above answers. I also think that in addition animals "speak" with their body language. Since they can't talk to us and we as humans respond well to eye contact and body language (informal communication) we enjoy the simplicity of the exchange. I think that animals also know we are the dominant species and show us respect and we respond to their "helplessness". And, they are really just so damn cute!

The response might be socially conditioned. Humans also tend to judge other mammals as more acceptable than amphibians or reptiles and this might be a response that is influenced by evolution. In my opinion, birds are absolutely adorable, but this may be caused by my acquisition of two parrots. They are just wonderful companions.

we are genetically programmed to feel sympathy (aww reflex) for babies (it helped the human species to look after the young). Animals that evolved the same characteristics (big eyes, cute faces) may have found this helped them from being preyed upon.

some is learned. but generally it is a product of our evolutionary development

Innocent

Pets have the same 'cuteness' factor as babies. They are helpless, can't talk, usually have big eyes on big heads for the size of their bodies, and they also know how to 'play' us for sympathy.

What's not to like? Here's a video of my favorite 'namesake' pet:

Their innocence, the cuteness, the way you just want to squeeze them soooo tight. I get the "awws" just thinking about them.

because we always have pity on those around us who are weak. just like little babies. we pity them and we are puffed up with our own sense of power. to see such an innocent (animal, child etc.) we are in a position of intellectual, physical and spiritual power. we feel a sense of warm, bonhome to these poor creatures and we smile.

yep, it all boils down to being superior.

I think it's because they are sort of helpless and look like they want to be petted because their so cute!

animals have a special way of letting us just be ourselves and as such we find ourselves gushing with emotions like when you see a bunch of puppies playing together you just giggle without any restraint.
