If any country eclipses the U.S., I think India would be a more likely candidate than China. China will very likely have a sloppy banking crisis to deal with. Basically, they do not have the assets to back-up the loans they have made. Freedom is a greater producer of wealth than slavery. They are also likely to have an environmental crisis in the next 20 years. Basically, they have used their countryside for all of their untreated, industrial sewage.

As an American I don't know all the in's and out's of economy. India has developed a more open society. India has been involved in educating and training their citizens for centuries. They developed business relations years before China. They have a large population that is quickly becoming middle class. China has a large population that is improving their situation. India and China both have problems, however India has a developed economic society and since they have been 'independent' for decades they have a better opportunity fore future growth than China and it's previously 'closed' economy.

China has evolved and has developed relations, but in my opinion India has a history that is economically more stable than China. India is the most powerful country on earth.

Very unlikely. A lot of people are mezmerized by their population--but they actually have a SMALLER proportion of the world population than at any time in the last 200 years--it hasn't made them a dominant force during that time; if anything it has--and continues--to hurt them.

And--they are making all the mistakes an industrializing countrycan make. That--and a clture that is fundamentally not innovative in the modern sense--are critical flaws that will make themselves very evident in due time.

I'm not saying China isn't emerging as a major power--they are. But they aren't going to be an overwhelming one--and are not likely to even end up in first--or even sectond--place. For what it's worth, here's my guess say, c. 2050: USA, European Union, China, India, Russia--in that order.

for a short period yes. China will become dominant. But trust me. It is going to collapse in on itself.

Any society that does have the ability to support the poorest of people is going to explode. China can not possibly provide for the population as a whole, the subsistence peasants are becoming angry as we speak.

Throw into that mix an economy based entirely on yuan linked to a dollar (no inflation), the corruption of the government, the pollution, the lack of retirement, the lack of available health care, the lack of quality farmland, the billion different people forced to follow a one party system (our forefathers revolted, I bet they will too) and no sir. Thats not a developing world. Thats a friggin powder keg.

in fourty years look me up and tell me I was right.

Given the way trade is going and the world currencies - all China has to do is switch completely to Euros, and the dollar tanks, which will destroy the US dollar and wipe out any pluses we have in trade.

From that point - they would have all the power to dictate political, financial, and geographical power. I see them easily creating a federation that takes in Japan, India, Phillipines, VietNam, and Koreas. They will be able to do through non combatant means what they couldn't before, and with that - threaten to topple Russia, Europe, and the US.

When was the last time China attempted to expand their borders? Other than reclaiming areas lost to Japan, and Hong Kong, I think you have to go back a few thousand years.
