The coach said I should be able to do 8 "lengths" or four laps or maybe it was the other way around. Right now I can go to each side 3 times. How long do you think it will take for me to be able to do 8 lenghths if I practice every day? Do you have any suggestions?

How many times do I need to go from each side of the pool? She totally confused me. I thought a lap and length were the same

Help please. Also, do you think if I ask the lifeguard or someone at the pool he can tell me If I'm doing it right?

You do realize that when you actually play water polo you have to tread for much longer and swim much harder, right?? The game is seperates into four quareters of 5, 6 or 7 minutes with a 2-minute interval between quarters. Substitutions are permitted only after a goal is scored, between periods or for an ejected player. Thus if you play you have to be able to keep moving for the allotted amount of time.

If you've already spoken to the coach, ask him how he would suggest you train until the tryouts. He would probably be able to give you the most specific, accurate workout for his team. Also this will show that you are serious about bettering yourself and making the team. Determination is key!

If you work hard and get your endurance and strength up you may be able to do it in a six to eight week. Just get in there every day for an hour or so and overshoot the requirements. Try to swim a 200 and tread for a full 5 minutes. Once you can do those things you will also need arm strength and coordination to throw and catch while in the water.

Good luck!

A length is 1 time the length of the pool. A lap is to the other side and back: so 2 lengths. So 8 lengths is 4 laps.

Take Tigerswimmings advice. And remember when treading water, do it with the eggbeater kick that is used in waterpolo.
A description of the technique is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treading_water#Eggbeater_Kick

A lap and a length are actually different but many people mean the same thing so you will have to ask.

Most life guards will help a little but they have to watch the pool so do not expect much

Take the distance you have to swim and split it up in to batches you can do. Then do them and reduce your rest at each break. Aftter you do that add lengths until you get to the distance
