How many people out there would start shooting heroin if it became legal tomorrow? Prohibition fuels organized crime and ruined urban areas across the US. It also puts the US at risk in Afghanistan. 90% of Afghan farmers grow opium because it is the most profitable crop. They aren't going to change that because of addiction in the US or Europe. As long as the coalition continues to insist on the irradication of opium. The Taliban will have support from the Afghan people, and the West would have lost another battle for "Hearts and Minds". The prohibition of drugs is causing more harm than it prevents. Repeal of prohibition would enable coalition forces in Afghnistan to work with the populace on building an Afghanistan where the Taliban could never come back. We can't lose Afghanistan like we have lost Iraq.

What about narco states in Latin America? The war on drugs has turned Central America into a cesspool of violence and corruption. It's funny how billions of dollars can go towards fighting this war and yet drugs are everywhere. As to your question about drugs being legalized: I used to drink and smoke but now I don't touch either of those substances. As for illegal drugs--been there, done that and I would never want to go back. I wouldn't care if drugs became legal because I choose sobriety of mind over any sort of inebriation any day. I think some drugs should be legal because we have too many people in prison so that rapists and murders have to get let out early.

Today is the day that prohibition ended back in , I believe 1933. To answer your question, the war on drugs does have similarities, but I still don't think it would be a good idea to legalize drugs. They have made it pretty much legal in some places in Europe and it is not a pretty sight with needles laying all over the place. I don't know what the answer is to solve the drug problem and apparently nobody else does.

Don't you think some politicians that are influential in the war on drugs are the very same people who profit from looking the other way on the legal drug trade? Vote Libertarian. End victimless crime. Better to spend mony on rehab than on imprisonment. Better to regulate prostitution than to allow people to be victimized by it. Don't you think its funny that the guy who was the czar for legal prostitution had to quite because he was caught calling a escort?

Great question, star for you! Back in the 1920's they tried it with alcohol and it didn't work. People still wanted it and all it did was open up the black market to supply it. This brings nothing but violence and crime. I'm not saying we should legalize all drugs but some.

I think a lot less people would do drugs if they were legal. For a lot of people, it takes out the risks. It just doesn't seem as fun to them. I think making them legal in small doses would be a huge help.

You also neglected to mention that the War on Drugs has made it so that a high school student can get ahold of pot or crack easier than they can buy beer.

A lot of good. There are a lot of people out there that don't do drugs simply because its illegal or it might ruin a job oppurtunity now or in the future.

I think it has done more harm then good. It also gives money to some bad people. If it "pot" was regulated we could have a standard of purity and the money could go to the government.

I think I'd smoke more pot (I've seen what harder drugs do to people, and have even tried some myself. I would never do it again) I think if alcohol is llegal, so should mary jane be.
