German - best overall was the Panther (PzKmpf V/Ausf.A); good speed and mobility, powerful weapon and solid armor

American - although only a limited number made it to the front by the end of the war, the M26 or Pershing was the best American tank of the war - I wouldn't knock anyone voting for the M4 or Sherman because it was reliable, quick and could easily be repaired and sent back to the fighting

The best German tank would be the Panzer V The Panther. A good tank of firepower, armor, and Mobility. The tank is useless if you can't get it their fast. The best American Tank is the M4 Sherman, This tank was a good tank for versitility, The tank was the best in the pacific and it was used for many jobs, bulldozer, hedge-copper, Amphibious tank, and the hull was used for the Self-Propelled Artillery. The best thing it had was numbers. The best anti-tank sherman is the firefly, the Brits put their best Anti-Tank gun that could fix in the turret and used it to fight the german tanks.

I would argue for the Panther as the best German tank, because it combined mobility, reliability, firepower, and armor in one excellent design. The Panther remained the best medium tank ever designed until at least the 1950s.

By default, I think the Sherman has to be the best American tank. However, before everybody groans, remember that the Sherman was incredibly well-designed for it's chief purpose...a quick sprint across France in classic combined arms breakthrough and exploitation. It was reliable, it had far less maintenance or treat slippage, it could be shipped across the Atlantic far more easily, and it got far better mileage. And while it wasn't designed to duke it out with Panthers and Tigers, there are documented cases where the superior turret traverse enabled Shermans to defeat German tanks.

best german tank: either the TigerII Ausf B Konigstiger (the heaviest wich saw action) or the Tiger I Ausf E. Probably the latter.

best american tank:
M4 Sherman Firefly (a british version of an american tank).
M36: the most effective tank-hunter
still, it probably was the M26 Pershing: the heaviest american tank

The best of the Wehrmacht (considering firepower, mobility, protection, reliability) was the Panzerkampfwagen V Ausf. G Panther.

The best of the US Army was the M26 Pershing. It was the only American tank that was on par with the Panther.

the best all-round American tank was, as everyone has already said, the M4 Sherman, though you could also argue that the M-26 was a much better tank hunter.

i'm surprised, however, that no one thought to put the German King tiger as the best for the Axis; sure, it was slow, expensive, hard to maintain, and made in small numbers, but almsot no contemporay tank gun at the time could beat its armor, and its own gun could knock out any other contender; even the infamous russian T-34
