Despite the popular craze, bettas really don't do well in a vase and the live plant scheme, for all the advertising it gets, really doesn't keep the water clean. If you think about it, plants produce their own waste too, and if you leave it in your betta's water, he's just going to be swimming around in the plant's waste AND his own. You can get a medium-sized bowl, or a 1 gallon tank or a 1/2 gallon tank for your betta and he will be just fine. I had a 2-gal tank for my betta and he was just fine in it for just over 2 years, and that's with only changing the water once every 4-6 weeks.

I totally agree with Bubbles, it is not fair to move him to a small vase after he has been in a nice tank. Here is an idea, get some plants to bush around the tank in clumps (either fake or real) then get a few neons to put in there with him. What I would recommend is getting around 4-5 neons and upgrade the filteration to 50 percent more then it is now. Take out your betta, move around the decorations and stick in the plants, then the neons, then finally put the betta back in it. That way, the betta will have new territory and should adjust to the "intruders" in his tank.

You may think you want the Neons, but they are known to be prone to diseases from poor breeding. I would suggest adding some shrimp to your 5 gallon tank, they will be more fun to watch than the neons would. I also have to comment on how much fun it is to read responses from people who have no idea what they are talking about. You can keep a Betta with any fish that does not have long colorful fins (don't keep with guppies, neons would be fine.) Bettas will live in the small vase, but they will not be as healthy. Their fins will be fine in a large aquarium, fake plants will damage their fins. Neons are really not suitable for a 5 gallon tank, they are really not worth the maintanace issue.
if you haven't gotten this by now, DO NOT GET THE NEONS!

bettas should actually be ok to mix with neons. I have a betta in a tank with some glowlights and he is doing just fine. A betta though CANNOT live a healthy life in a vase. he needs at least a gallon, and a filter. anything less is cruel. Just as long as you do not mix your betta with fin nipping fish or agressive fish he will be okay in a community tank, that has been what i have been told, and have recently experimented with. So far so good for me, so you might as well give it a try. Just dont put too many fish in the one tank.

I have always left my beta's in with the a water plant such as like the chinese water bamboo, you might see them around like chinese places (there's a link on the bottom if you have no idea what i'm talking about) I usally buy the longer ones, put it in a clear vase that is atleast 3/4 - full gallon and leave my beta in there. My most recent one has been there for the last 3 years. But it is necessary to clean the vase atleast every week or week and a half. Leaving about a 1/3 of the original water in there each time.
Don't worry about it being in plant waste, which by the way if you remember photosynthesis from like 7th grade, you would recall that plants take in carbon dioxide and sunlight, which is converted to glucose as food. Then they let out oxygen and H2O as their waste products, which would be good for water.
Or if you want to use another method that works is that you go out buy a separater/divider for your 5 gallon aquarium, one that isn't see through and there you have another makeshift tank.

Do not remove the betta to a plant/vase POS. Keep him where he is, they get along fine with neons. Add some plants and a cave to the tank and all will be well.

A beta would be fine in a vase, contrary to what the first response says... I had a beta that lived 3 years in a vase. I am not sure if it will do well in a tank with other fish. You can try looking at pet stores that ave dividers for tank that way you can have both fish in the take but no way for the beta to harass other fish.

get some decent size plants that they can hide from each other in and they can live fine together. I like putting plants in clumps in the middle instead of slammed against the outsides. then the fish can swim around them and interact with them. if you get largish plants that hit the top of the water thats great for the betta. bettas like using large leaves to rest on and the tetras can dart in and out of the plants.

first of all neon's are fragile and the tank has to have cycled first. give it like 6 weeks and then add them in with your Betta. I have 3 in my 10 gal with my Betta and they coexist fine together

Bettas are predatory and will likely attack and kill the smaller tetras. You're better off to get a calm breed around the same size as your betta, like blue moon platties. Consult an aquarium store for more info on which fish are compatible with bettas and which aren't.
