We have chinchillas and they are great. They are a little expensive to get (around $80-95), but they are pretty cheap to take care of. They are small, furry and very friendly. We really enjoy playing with ours. They are a little peculiar compared to most domestic pets, so before getting one make sure you know how to take care of them well.

I assume you want something you can hold. So go to your local animal shelter and adopt an older cat. Sometimes an owner dies and the cat ends up at the shelter. An adult cat is no trouble and they know you saved its life. A cat can live to age 18 so getting one thats a few years old is not a problem. The best litter to use is scoop away unscented. It adheres to the fluid you only scoop that out and the rest stays in. lb per lb. it actually lasts longer and is just such a clean litter box.put it someplace out of the way. With scoop away use 3 inches. this way it gets absorbed ans not stuck to the bottom. I just add more as it gets lower from the scoop. I don;t even bother cleaning the box but just rather scoop evey day. I scoop into a plastic or small paper bag and toss in the garbage. only the poop smells but the litter even helps with that. I live in a small studio apt. myslef with two cats and there is never a smell. Most shelters have extra donated supplies so you can probably even get a litter box there. Or go to the $ store and get it there. Always look for alternatives for you supplies except the litter. Cats actually sleep about 18 hours of cat naps so she'll be sleeping when you are gone and awake when you are home. When you go say you are willing to adopt an older cat but your money is tight but you can afford to take care of it. Also go to the bulletin board at the pet store. Sometimes people need to find new homes for their animals and you might get a free one. Best of luck. I love my cats!!!!!

I too am in the same boat. I went with a tank animal (gerbils, hamsters) To start this usually costs around $40-$50. and to maintain, per year its about $20. yes, you could spend more to get a fancy habitrail, or the likes but plastics don't work well with these. They are stuffy and absorb smells. I have a 10 gallon tank with a topper that doubles my hamsters living space with out bothering mine. And he is very entertaining. If you are interested send me an email and i will help you get started.

As someone who lives on a fixed budget and in a small apt... I would suggest one of two things.

1: Fish... a small 10 or 20 gallon tank. There are tons of fish to pick from to suit your own taste and it can be made into a nice focal point in a small space. They are also simple (depends on the species of fish you get) to take care of.

2: Rat... again simple and cheap to take care of. They are also extremely smart to the point you can teach them their name. They are large enough to enjoy but not small enough to escape and never find (like a mouse).

Although small animals (rats, mice, hamsters) are cheap, vet care can cost up to hundreds of dollars. Unless you can provide adequate medical care I would get something along the lines of fish.

Get a bunny rabbit.....they do not need vaccines.
The only major expense is to make sure it is neutered or spayed.
Rabbits can be litter box trained and are a lot of fun to play with.
Their life span is about 8yrs.

Get a betta fish. They're clean, pretty, and inexpensive. Feed it daily and clean the "tank" occasionally and you're good.

A kitten, they are relatively clean all you need is a litter box and a food dish. They are easy to take care of.
