It's not the hardware that's the issue right now. It's the available hardware drivers and software that's compatible with Vista is the problem. If you still plan on upgrading to Vista (at least to Vista Home Premium), wait another 6-8 months when the availability of compatible drivers and software catch up and/or mature...

Stick with XP!! The last thing you want to do is upgrade to Vista with those settings. First of all, the shiny Aero interface won't run on those settings, so it'll look like a slightly-upgraded XP. And the first service pack still isn't out yet, and it slows down all computers, old or fast.
Before you get Vista, you should seriously upgrade your RAM, CPU, graphic card... lol everything.
Just stay with XP now. Vista doesn't really have anything that ground-breaking anyways.

You should definitely stay with Windows XP because Windows Vista is a very low quality product. Don't think that just because it's the newest that it's the best product from Microsoft. Windows 98 is very old, and I don't have any problems with it. Windows XP is great, and there is no need to upgrade to Windows Vista.

DEFINITELY stick with XP for now, not only because Vista is WAY too buggy, but because Vista would run so slow on your computer, you would HATE Microsoft.
You would want to do this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=6BUf6uruK-k

vista = new n broken and unpatched. XP is older, but more reliable because most bugs have been reported and fixed.
