Actually if you had no computers you could still connect a wireless router to your broadband modem and others could use your internet service wirelessly.

A router is not dependant on any device. It is a stand alone device that once it is on and configure will work with no computer attached.

Not sure what the question is, but:

You can use a regular router or a wireless one to create a home network to transfer files among computers. A wireless router is used to allow the person free mobility in the house without the use of network cables.

Also, regular or wireless routers usually ship with and SPI firewall (stateful packet inspection) that can protect the computers inside of the home network. In essence, the computers are not directly connected to the Internet and all traffic is managed by the router ensuring people can't reach your computer unless you specifically create rules to open communication to inside computers.

Finally, a router is a good idea to ensure your computer is not directly exposes to the Internet. Even if you only have one computer.

No, you don't need 2 computers but You do need a router if you intend to use a laptop. My laptop has WiFi so all I did was hook up my router to my cable modem and let WiFi do the rest by finding al avalable signals and picking the one that was from my router. But I can use my nieghbors roputer if I want to.
