What part of Texas? If it is hot and dry, try succulents and cactus. if those won't grow, try plastic!!!!!! :-)

Caliche dirt? Clay? Sand? Add organic material, coffee grounds, tea bags, lettuce leaves, dead leaves, grass clippings, heck, beer! only cheap on sale stuff. Turn all those good things in there and plant impatiens. They love morning sun, water them when they hit the pavement. They'll tell you.

Or, add those good organic things and Xerescape with succulents as suggested previously.

Aint TX dirt just about the best?

What you can plant depends on your climate together with how much you are willing to spend. One thing that you NEED to be able to plant anything, especially in conditions that are less than ideal, is either GOOD QUALITY potting soil, or worm castings a.k.a. vermicast. They are both loaded with nutrients and they both time-release the water and nutrients to your plants which would be very beneficial since they already will not be getting adequate light. Worm castings are a little better than potting soil, but do not use worm castings if you're planting veggies since they can attract worms which may eat your veggies. Good luck!

I was going to say succulents too. Real Simple this month has a section on window boxes and one with succulents.

Caladiums, elephant ears, wood ferns, hostas, and impatients work well, as long as you water and feed properly.
