I have no idea how many. After 32 years in the classroom all I know is there has been lots. Sure they come and visit after they hit high school and I often get e-mails. Interestingly I have kept in contact with several former students who are now parents and raising their own families and they come and visit. I get many invitations to high school graduations and over the years have attended about a dozen University grad ceremonies. I have even been invited to the weddings of 5 former students.
Yes, one receives many gifts etc but what I have treasured are the letters and cards with comments that students have given me over the years. Re-reading my treasures brings tears to my eyes.
One of the nicest comments to receive at the end of the year is from the student who looks you in the eyes and says 'Thank-you'.
I could never in a million years see myself do anything other than what I already do. It is the best and most rewarding profession that exists.

Too many to count. Just yesterday, I received a paper written by one of my former students. The teacher who had her now had heard of the school I was in and sent it to me. It was a thank you letter for all that I taught her. She talked about how she couldnt read and how I had helped her in fun ways. She said I was more than a teacher I was her friend and now she loved to read.
Another one and this tells how old I am... a little girl with a big attitude came into my room. She started talking cokcy and put her hands on her hips...reminded me of a s tudent I had my first year of teaching twenty years ago. Her mother was that student. Her mother wrote me a beautiful letter apologizing for the hard time she gave me in class and that she was the woman and mother she was today because of the love that I showed her.

I have had many in the 25 years I have been teaching. I have had some come to see me that I had in junior high when they get to High School. They love to let me know how they are doing.
I had one 8th grader one year who was sort of a misunderstood fellow and was judged on his looks--long hair, tough looking , but he would say to me -- Mrs. ____ , you have been the only teacher who encourages me and doesn't judge me ahead of time by my looks. On his last day of junior high, he would not go outside for "play day". He stayed in the room with my assistant and I and helped us clean up and put things away. When it was time to go -- he looked as if he would cry--this kid with the rough-tough outer exterior -- he said thank you Mrs. ___for helping me do well and believing in me. I was then the one to cry.
I have had many return as young adults --telling me of their job, or bringing spouses and babies to show off. It makes me feel like they have become successful when they are out in the world being good productive citizens.
Being a teacher has been the most rewarding part of my life the past years and I hope I still have a few more left in me.

Maybe one in 15, some years one in 20. Hardly any really. But they are kids and we are adults, and it is a learning thing - how to be appreciative.
