First, let's factor the thing:

243 = 3 * 81 = 3*9*9 = 3*3*3*3*3

Hence, 243 = 3^5

Or if you want to be as smartass, you can simply say:
243 = 243^1
That's exponential notation too, but probably not what your teacher is looking for!
