Here is the site I use to publish 95 percent of all my stories.

Make sure you read and understand all the guidelines before you submit. All your stories have to be formatted properly before hand. Short stories are aimed at a wide variety of audiences. I believe the one I gave you here deals mostly with SciFi and Horror.

Here is another one that deals with a variety of genres.

You are probably not going to become rich overnight, but yes there is a market. All across the United States, and beyond, there are wonderful literary journals that still believe in the power of the written word. There are also magazines that still publish short stories. You need to thoroughly research the market in order to see what fits with your imagination and writing style. If you haven't become part of a writer's workshop, you should because many people have already done this hard work -- especially the professors and group leaders -- and they will often point you in a direction based on your talent as well as what they know editors want to see. I went to do research for you on literary journals and much to my surprise, Yahoo already has a very good list. Read it over and see where it takes you. Best wishes for a successful literary careet. --Kate P.S. I don't know where you live, but every summer in Milton, Massachusetts, the Blue Hills Writing Institute convenes at Curry College. There are many good writers, professors and published authors at this week-long event. People come from all over the country to attend.

College campus literary magazines publish short story fiction. Outside of that, some of the nationally recognized literary magazines like Atlantic Monthly, Saturday Evening Post, Playboy, The New Yorker, Chicago Magazine all publish short stories by well known writers. There are plenty of short story fiction books published each year with collections of short stories by one particular writer. That writer of course had made a name for him or herself publishing short stories in magazines. The best place for you to start is Writer's Digest annual book. There are listings in there of journals and magazines accepting short stories.

I could try to list them but your best bet is to go to Barnes & Noble and go to the magazine section and ask for the Sci-Fi anthology magazines like "Asimov" and the like.

Then, go to the regular sci-fi section of the store and check out the annual Sci-Fi short story contest anthologies and collections.

There are dozens...hundreds perhaps.
