I've been on Estrostep for about a year now and it's been working fine with my body however I recently caught strep and am now on antibiotics for 10 days. I know my doctor told me when I started Estrostep that antibiotics will effect the way the birth control works -- does it stop the pill from protecting me entirely? SHould I just stop taking the pill until I'm done with my 10 days of antibiotics? or just continue taking the pill with my antibiotics?

First off you should NEVER stop your pills.

But yes, anitbiotics can effect them. They don't make them useless.. what it does is lessen the effect. You could be fine and not get pregnant, but I wouldn't take the chance.

It should say right on the antibiotics that it can lessen the effectiveness of birth control pills. I was on anitbiotics not that long ago and stated it right on them. You should use a back up method such as condoms for the entire time your on the anitbio's. Just to be safe I would use a back up method for the whole time your on them plus 1 week after.

it depends on the antibiotic. Google-search the antibiotic name with birth control, like "Minoclycline 100 mg and birth control pills". quite a few drug sites (and sometimes even birth control sites) will tell you if your antibiotic is KNOWN to affect birth control pills. if you're not sure, it is very very important to phone your doctor and clarify. until then, you should ASSUME that the antibiotic WILL affect your birth control pill in some way. something to think about; an antibiotic affects birth control by changing the way the body process and consumes the hormones, OR it changes the way the stomach absorbs it. so if you are experiencing diarrhea, frequent urination, or any other disruption to your digestive system, it MAY be a sign that your birth control consumption is being tampered with by your antibiotic.

Yes for sure. I have a 26 year old son from taking antibiotics when on the pill. Don't stop taking the pill, but use a condom too.

YES YES YES. Always ask your doctor but so many people get pregnant because of this. And remember, birth control takes 3 months to go back into effect. So, for the next three months be triple protected.

Antibiotics can affect the pill. Make sure you inform your doctor and pharmacist about it so they can warn you to use alternative forms of contraceptive till your antibiotics wear off.

Keep taking the pill.

No. Keep taking your bc pills, but if you are sexually active, use a condom until you start your next bc packet...and wait five days into that packet. The ovum rarely lives longer than 5 days

i take the same pill...Don't worry! I've been sick a lot this year and have taken a lot of pills...so don't worry. Especially amoxicillan..it won't effect how it keeps your period regular, but it does lower your protection...not completely tho...keep taking your pills...you don't want to be very sick now, do you?
ciao for now,
tara
