The federal responsibilities are laid out in Article 1/Section 8 of the Constitution. To give you a brief answer. The Feds are responsible for carrying out foreign policy, coining money, regulating interstate commerce, and providing for the defense of the nation in raising armies and navies. Obviously there are more factors, but these are the main points.

State responsibilities are nowhere explicitly listed. But in practice, states are responsible for "People Problems." It's the states which are primarily responsible for police, fire, and education. Their job is to ensure the peace and safety of the people on a day to day basis.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

I could not possibly list all the responsibilities of the federal government. To simplify it, they make laws, enforce laws, and make sure that new laws aren't illegal, due to older laws. Each of these jobs depends on each branch of government.

As far as states rights, that's covered pretty well in the 10th Amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." So, all the responsibilities that the federal government doesn't hold are given to the states.

It's in the US Constitution within the body (articles) and the 10th Ammendment. The Federal government is responsible for national defense, international relations, and interstate commerce. All other responsibilities are reserved for the several states. See: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/constitution/html/amdt10.html

That is very complicated. What you need to look for is what services are paid for by federal income tax dollars and what are paid for by state income tax dollars.

Ex- Medicare is a federal responsibility. Your local fireman may be state and or city responsibility.
