Think about it. Everything we do involves consuming something, directly or indirectly.

I think we equally consume and create.

No, consumption is only a pre-requisite to survival. The human's only real purpose is to survive in order to procreate. Procreation is the only legacy for most people. There are exceptions, of course; politicians, great figures from history, inventors, etc. But for most people, the only thing they leave behind is their genes and cultural / family traditions.
Some people actually produce more than they consume and so have a net negative consumption.

No, I believe the purpose of all life is for each being to find harmony within themselves. If our only purpose was to consume what would be the point in our abilities to feel, think, reason, or learn?

interesting question. i don't' t think it is that simple. whatever mans purpose is it was lost a long time ago and will never be known again.

with that said man or should i say Americans have been conditioned to consume. we are consumers whose only real mental dilemma is what to buy. this is a product of capitalism that has put a stranglehold on our very being and there is no escape.

Mufasa: Everything you see exists together in a delicate balance. As king, you need to understand that balance and respect all the creatures, from the crawling ant to the leaping antelope.
Simba: But dad, don't we eat the antelope?
Mufasa: Yes, Simba, but let me explain. When we die, our bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass. And so we are all connected in the great Circle of Life.

Purpose....hhmmm...I don't think it is an appropriate choice of word for your question....Humans do consume.....but purpose......

Change is the only thing constant

Everything is energy

The glass is half empty, The glass is half full

Subjective/Objective thinking

Think larger than yourself....there is a bigger picture....and we (society/humans) do not have a fraction of the answers....

******These are my thoughts after reading your question******

Consider conservation of energy. It is true that humans
consume, but consumption does not necessarily imply
destruction. Energy is transformed into another form of
energy. Ideally, the transformed output energy should
outweigh the input consumed energy. Therefore, efficiency
is not necessarily lost from consumption.

Yes, and providing for others.

If they took back from you everything you took from the world, and gave you back everything you gave, would you be a net "winner" or "loser"? I sometimes think about that.

We were given a strong, free and prosperous country. We have to look at both sides of the equation and give our children at least as good a country as our parents gave us.

Look at a deer or any other kind of animal. Like them, humans are here to procreate and to consume.
