If you are in NYS you can go to this website

http://www.op.nysed.gov/home.html

This is the Office of the Professions - NYS Education Department. It will give you the doctor's license number and any past complaints, etc.... If you are not in NYS I would search for this type of organization online for your home State. Most have one.

ordinary people don't need this info and so rarely get it.

Pharmacists need it as part of verifying a faxed in prescription, thus doctors are reluctant to tell you what it is.

With a good reason, they likely will though.
