During memorial day weekend 1986, celebrities, politician, and regular ol' folk, joined hands to form a massive human chain from New York to California. Numerous singers joined in to make the song "Hands across America" (USA for Africa)such singers included Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Henry Bellafonte, Barbara Streisand. 20 million dollars were raised for hunger. Organizers called for a 4,125 mile human chain. The event cost 17 million dollars and fell short of the 50 million dollar goal, however 20 million was distributed for hunger.

This brings back memories. I did not participate, but I do remember this.

It was started by USA for Africa. It happened on May 25, 1986. People paid $10 to reserve their space. It was an attempt to create a human chain from coast to coast, specifically from New York City's Battery Park to a pier in Long Beach, CA. There were, of course, breaks in the chain, but 5 million people participated. The money raised went to local charities to help get rid of hunger and homelessness.
