Clearly, some people don't know the difference between a majority and plurality. Al Gore did not win the majority of the popular vote. As everyone else has mentioned, Jimmy Carter did.

Well since this question has already been answered correctly, I'll add a side note. When a politician says they won by a land slide split the amount (S)He won by & acknowledge that if that number + 1 voted the other way the other side would have won.

Jimmy Carter won just over 50%, in 1976.

Gore wone more popular votes than Bush in 2000, but neither reached 50%.

I'm glad Gore lost, but the wording of the question immediately brings the 2000 election to mind.

Al Gore in 2000 - the majority in our 2 party system is whoever gets the most popular votes, but that's not the way the electoral college votes.

Gore.

What's funny is that Dems think that a total of approximately 550,000 votes should have overridden the electoral process, and allowed 20 states dictate to the rest of the country who our president should be.

I'll bet my next pay check that had the absentee ballots from the military that were not allowed been allowed, that would have easily made up for more than that 550,000.

Apparently liberals don't understand what a majority vote is.

Carter did it, by the way.
