Was it a full moon?

When the Apollo 11 flight was launched the Moon was a thin waxing crescent, and when the landing took place four days later it was a thicker waxing crescent. This was deliberate, as they timed the landing so that it occurred just after sunrise at the landing site. The landing site for Apollo 11 was in the sea of tranquility, which is located well on the right hand side of the face of the Moon as seen from Earth.

It was waxing gibbeous. They went in the Moon's "morning" time because it allowed shadows to be on the surface, thus allowing the astronauts to have a more accurate feeling of distance.

They went in the morning so the temperature wouldn't be too hot for the spacesuit air conditioning to handle.
