I went to the hospital Saturday night because I was cramping and bleeding. They did blood work, and an ultrasound and said that the baby had no heart beat and my levels dropped from 23,000 to 6,000. They sent me home. I go see my doctor this Thurs, and see what my options are. I am 13 weeks, but the baby measured 8 weeks. Is it possible for my doctor to give me pills, that will help me fully miscarry the baby. If not how long will the dnc take?? How much pain will will I be in, and for how long?? After the dnc will I be able to go home that same day?? Thanks!!! I will give 10 points to the best answer!!

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. :( I was 12 weeks and went in for cramping and bleeding. The baby measured at 8 weeks. I was such an emotional mess that day that the doctor recommend I have a D&C that day. When I asked about the differences between waiting to have one naturally, taking the pills, and having a D&C, the doctor recommended the D&C over the pills (I didn't want to try to go through it naturally because it could take a long time and be very painful). The pills aren't FDA approved or something (It's been a while so I don't remember exactly what she said), and the D&C is minimally evasive.

The procedure usually takes less than half an hour (though you'll be doing a lot of waiting at the hospital, so plan to take the day to recover), and you get to go home that day. I think I waited around for maybe 10 minutes after the surgery to wake up from the anesthesia. I vomited on the way home (most likely from the anesthesia) and had some painless bleeding. I think I cramped just a little that day, but it was no worse than cramps from a period. My doctor gave me a prescription for pain killers, but I don't remember needing much of them at all.

If you choose to have the miscarriage naturally, your body might not expel everything, and you could have some tissue to remain that will cause you to have a D&C anyway.

The D&C really helped me get through the ordeal emotionally because it happened so quickly, and I was able to recover emotionally w/o having to worry much about recovering physically. The only part that really sucked was that I couldn't take a bath until the doctor saw me again (you can shower). Sometimes taking a long hot bath is therapeutic.

I'm extremely sorry for your loss. Please take comfort in knowing that it happens far more often than you'd think and that almost everyone goes on to have normal healthy babies in the future. I just had my first prenatal visit today and so far everything is going great. There are lots of really supportive women online who have gone through the pain of miscarriage if you need any support. Feel free to hit me up too! I wish you the best for whatever decision you make.

After a DNC, you can go home that day. I am pretty sure that they will not give you the pills just because a DNC is more through. DNC's usually take about an hour, maybe a little more depending on how long the ultrasound takes and the prep for surgery. There is quite a bit of pain involved and they will give you pain meds. I was in pain for about a week. At first it felt like really hard period cramps and then they lightened up towards the end.

I am sorry that you had to go through this! (((hugs)))

I'm so sorry you are going through this! I had an early miscarriage before and my heart goes out to you. I'm not sure on the pills... Usually they just try to let nature take it's course. Since it seems like it hasn't, they will probably suggest the dnc. If you have it done, you can go home the same day. Be sure to have someone with you that can drive because you won't be able to. I've had one and afterwards the effects of the anesthesia was worse then the dnc. I was home that day and I bled for about a week after... No worse then a period.
Again, I am sorry.
Very Best Wishes!

First I would like to say that I am sorry for your loss. You seem to be handling this well. I am not sure of pills, but a DNC usually does not take very long. As far as pain, you will have quite a bit of cramping during the procedure and then for a few days afterwards, you will have bleeding a little heavier than a period lasting a week to 10 days, and yes, unless there are problems, you will be able to go home the same day.

First of all, my condolensces for your loss. Second, your doctor could give you a medication to complete the miscarriage, but that doesn't always work fully. That may leave "products of conception" in your uterus which will require a D & C (Dilitation and Curettage) to clean the uterus out.
A D & C usually takes about 30-45 minutes to complete and they would usually keep you in the recovery room for 1-2 hours following the procedure to keep watch on your vital signs, amount of bleeding, discomfort level, etc. Then you could definitely be discharged the same day.
Usually a D & C causes a lot of cramping that can usually be taken care of with Motrin, and it also can cause cramping or discomfort in the inner thigh area from the position they have to put your legs in during the procedure (the lithotomy position). This discomfort may last for a few days, and if it lasts longer than that, you should contact your physician.
Your next period following a D & C may be either lighter or heavier than normal and you may have worse cramping due to the procedure. Good luck and I hope this helps!

You will probably need a D&C [ dilitation and curettage - means they dilate the opening to the cervix, and gently scrape out the contents of the uterus - baby, placenta, etc.]
Ask to be put to sleep - they will probably offer anyway.
A normal D&C is pretty quick - less than 30 minutes.
If you start cramping and bleeding before then, call the doc.
You will have some cramping, and some bleeding [ like you would during a period or after a birth].You will be uncomfortable for a few days, but I have seen people back at work in 2-3 days [ although I wouldn't recommend it. ]

there is no pill to take. in august of 2006, i had a D&C done. it took maybe 5 hours at the most and that was waiting for them to give me anesthesia and an IV and waiting for the anesthesia to wear off, the actual surgery i think took about an hour. you will have period like cramps afterward but they give you motrin or some other pain killer so it's not as painful maybe a couple of days it will hurt, and you can go home the same day but you should have someone with you for the next 24 hours to help you get around. Good luck and i'm sorry for your loss.

to my knowledge ther is no pilla nd your dr will want to do a d and c to be sure they clean you out, yes you should be home the same day, the d and c only take an hour normally unless there is a problem. you will ne in pain. i was and yes it lasted for like 3 weeks, it feels liek a bad period with cramps and i passed alot of clumps. i also had emotionally pain. just take it one day at a time and i am so sorry for your loss, this is a horrible thing to go thru and it is hard and it will take time. the baby may just come out on its own and i do not know why the hospital sent you home they should have done the d and c to be sure there is no infection in you, that was wrong of teh hospital.god bless you

I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriage. A dnc is pretty much an abortion. It takes a few hours and someone will have to take you and pick you up. They go in and clean out what is left over. You will go home the same day, but you will be very tired and sore. Tell them you want general anesthesia, that way you can be sleeping the whole time.
