...or a success?

Either or Neither?

I would say neither.
It is all a circle. up and down around in a cycle. If you want a certain cycle to stop repeating itself, then change (of behavior, attitude, etc.) is imminent. But the cycle of ups and downs never stops and i don't believe it starts anywhere, because personally, i can't find the beginning or end of a circle.
the attitude of letting life begin again is futile, it is always ongoing whether you are up or down. what changes is your acceptance of it.

Sometimes both success and disappointment play a part in beginning a new phase of life. Any married couple could agree that their marriage has been wrought with surprises; kind of like a new adventure. But I don't think the disappointments ever out-do the successes until couples decide to divorce.

Each phase of life starts differently some start with disappointment some don't. Hope that helps.

Disappointment or success.....both motivators. And both or either can be reasons and preludes to a next phase in life.

I think each new phase can begin with a clean slate and the successes and disappointments come later.

I guess a little bit of both. Sure, there is always an initial disappointment (that's what gets you motivated), but it also just makes final success so much sweeter

I'd say either...It all depends on the attitude you have going in to the new phase in life! After all...Life IS what you make it!

Once again both apply depending on circumstance. The real intelligence comes into play by knowing the difference and acting accordingly.

I believe all new journeys begin with a single step of a thousand steps...
All pain and misery will be left behind when the old door closes...
All beauty will be shown to you as the new door opens...

In my experience it's been either. Unfortunately it's usually the disappointment.
