Gotta 2nd the Rush cover of "Summertime Blues" & Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower'.

Rush's version makes The Who's version look like Hilary Duff.

There's a lot of good ones out there, couple fav's, check out the Jane's Addiction version of Sympathy for the Devil. Also That's What Love Will Make You Do, by the Jerry Garcia Band.

I'd have to go with Elliott Smith covering Big Star's song Thirteen. It's a beautiful song, great lyrics. He didn't do much to make it his own, no real changes or anything, but it just sounds like the song was written for him. The Big Star version is very good too, but the cover is better. Off the top of my head it's my favorite.

I love the Dynamite Hack version of Boys in the Hood... I had the original single back in the day and the newer one is a new twist. I like that they didn't just sing the same thing. The change in genre and tempo reinvented it nicely

I second Johnny Cash's Hurt...
U2 does an awesome - I can't help falling in love with you
Matchbox 20 - Time after time

If I watch the Hurt video on you tube my heart just breaks - he really made it his own - a culmination of his life and experiences - and that is the mark of a great musician.

Guns N' Roses - Knockin' on Heaven's Door
or
Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower

I agree with Hendrix's "Watchtower" as the best.

The most surprisingly good one, though, has to be Johnny Cash's cover of "Rusty Cage". I hated the soundgarden version, though I usually like soundgarden; and loved the Cash version, though I'm not much of a Cash fan.
