i want to plug my usb adapter into my internet connected pc and make it into an access point can this be done?

You can, but only for one computer at a time. Ad-Hoc mode is only for communication between two computers and no matter what speed of wireless adapter you have it will max out at 11Mb/s.

You can do this by setting up the adaptor in ad-hoc mode. You need to set it's ssid manually. Not all cards have software to support this, and the range will be poor, routers and access points have better range than wireless cards as such. After you set it up you need to set any other machines up to the same ssid, and then set internet connection sharing on the modem connection using the network connection wizard. If you then use the wizard to set all the other machines up to connect to the internet through another pc you automate the process.
