This is a good question. I have asthma and I went through labor without any problems. You must have good information from your physician with regards to your asthma and you should be aware of how frequent you have had problems. I exercised regularly and really went through deep breathing exercises to learn how to use "control" so that I would not loose it - and hyperventilate. If you have regular attacks, you may want to reconsider. Sometimes, in a panic, asthma sufferers may forget how to deep breathe and in your case having a baby may put additional and undue pressure on you and the baby. I strongly advise that you consult with your doctor about this. I had extensive consulation with mine before I made this decision. Sometimes the "panting" portion of the delivery combined with the stress of the contraction and the directions that are being yelled at you ("Pant, mother, "breathe, hold it, don't push....etc.etc) can confuse you. There was a part of me that was not listening to them, I was following my own body rhythms, but they can actually 'see' as the baby is coming closer to the exit. I wish you well in your delivery. As much as I would never ask for the ephidural - (they gave it to me anyway and it was too late - the baby was already crowning. All it did was weaken my knees for several years afterwards) I know that there is no reason for anyone to suffer in pain while trying to deliver when there is a remedy. Good luck to you and your family.

Yes they can am one of them I have 3 kids two where natural deliveries no pain medication either . Just carry your fast acting inhaler and make sure your Dr. knows you have asthma. Also it might be good if you remind every hospital personnel that you have asthma, the day of delivery, so that they know what to do in case you get an asthma attack. Also Remind your family that you have asthma the same day of delivery.just in case. Good Luck and my God with you in the labor process.

Yes - my wife has asthma (not as severe as it used to be) and she gave natural birth - REAL natural birth, as in no drugs - twice.
