In response to Lauren H's answer, Mendel did NOT know that genes carried traits. He only knew that traits could be inherited, and that an allele could be recessive or dominant.
This is what I dug up on MadSci:
DNA was first discovered way back in 1869 by Johann Friedrich Miescher. He called his molecule nuclein, but today we know that Miescher's nuclein was actually DNA and RNA. It wasn't until the 1950's that DNA was determined to be the genetic material. This was accomplished by two scientists, Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase, who studied viral replication in bacteria. But the "great" discovery was still to come in 1953 when James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the three-dimensional structure of DNA: a double helix (a double helix looks like a spiral staircase).

By the book, it was Watson and Crick who discover the DNA structure. In reality, it wasn't. They stole from a lady scientist who died a few years before the Nobel prize was given.
It is a known fact in the DNA world.

DNA was first isolated by the Swiss physician Friedrich Miescher in 1869.
As stated elsewhere, Watson and Crick uncovered the STRUCTURE of DNA and were awarded the Nobel Prize, but all of the work in x-ray crystallography on which their work was based, was done by Rosalind Franklin who did not get the recognition she deserved.

What? No one wants to give credit to Rosalind Franklin?? She's the one who took the picture of DNA, and Watson and Crick basically stole the idea from her.

if i might say, im damn tired of hearing about rosalind franklin. i dont know if youve been in a biology class lately, but every f'ing bio teacher that starts talking about dna has to stop and say "by the way, rosalind franklin got robbed." if they mention watson and crick at all, its to explain franklin's situation. and why must we learn this continually? if they didnt discover, then someone else in the near future would have. its not like they were einstein with a crackpot idea that changed the way we view the world.
