I mean I've heard them use Immigrant Song, Rock and Roll, Magic Carpet Ride, Bargain, Magic Bus, Have Love Will Travel, Dream On, Smoke on the Water and many many more on car commercials. Why?

Well, because it generally costs the companies less to use older songs but not always. It's the same reason why you find a lot of these songs on so many remembering when cd's and late night infomercials. It doesn't mean that they're bad but less expensive to use.

Because it appeals to the widest range of car buyers. Even people in my age [early 20's] group probably know who those bands are. They don't always, though. I recall a Pontiac commercial set to Republica's Ready to Go rock version, that came out in the later 1990's. I'm thinking it was for the redesigned Grand Am or Grand Prix. I think Mitsubishi used it too with the Galant more recently. I'm just sayin' - Republica certainly isn't "classic" yet.

Because Satan tempts the writers of those songs with money. Robert Plant is none too pleased about "Immigrant Song" or any Zep song being used in commercials, but he has no control over it; Jimmy Page made the deal.

B/c they're trying to appeal to the baby boomers who grew up w/ them.

I can tell ya, it's nothing new though. I remember in the 70s, they used popular songs. Back then there was a tv commercial from Heinz ketchup & they used a Carly Simon song. ("Anticipation")

Enough band members are dead or broke to sell the rights to their music. Blitzkreig Bop to sell Pepsi? Just says to me look how many of the Ramones are dead.
