or will it just fall out? they are smaller sized and it would just be temporary... I dont want to mount it to anything-my guy has a fit when I install things he puts off and will say its wrong no matter how I do it- so I want some cold air without causing any permanent damage-can I just put it in,it has window tracks that seem like they would hold.

Yes you can do it that way but you might want to brace it on the outside with a piece of 2 X 4 to help support the weight. If it fell on a child or animal it could really hurt them. Install the unit and then get your guy to screw it in for you so he won't get mad at you.

Well, duct taping it in to get a seal would work, but you don't want to leave it just wedged in there, not safe. i would screw it in to be safe, the duct tape seals well against draft, but it's a lot more work to scrub the gummy adhesive off, than to putty 4 small holes, pre-drill the holes with a slightly smaller drill bit to prevent the window sash splitting, i would use 1 1/4 inch flat headed course thread phillips (x -head) screws, just long enough to really hold, too short to come out the back of the sash, and small shank, so small hole to fill.

Yes, just put a/c in and close window on tracks. I never use screws when I put my a/c in the window. Just dont open window without holding a/c

It will fall out. Try putting a lot of obvious duct tape and other fasteners on it so when he sees it he can say "That is not good. I need to attach it with screws right now to get rid of that ugly taping."

Make sure to put cardboard around the open window area so bugs don't come in and cold air don't escape.
