Why can't anyone spell or use punctuation correctly anymore? Pet peeve: extraneous apostrophes!?

Well, one reason is because more and more children are joining the internet community. For the most part, they haven't learned proper grammar and spelling. And then you've got the fact that a lot of people are just to lazy too run a spell-check or watch their grammar.

Another reason might be that most people use the Internet for recreational purposes. The following paragraph is taken from http://www.nyceducated.info/blog/category/internet/blogging/page/2/,albeit with a few alterations.

When the average person is in an instant message conversation, he won’t exactly use proper grammar and spelling (”lol” is a very common phrase). However, when writing a letter of recommendation to a university, one will spell check over and over again. People will type differently under different conditions.

So, yeah. There's that.

People don't really know how or when to use the apostrophes. They use an apostrophe in the possessive sense when they are showing plural
EX: The dog's are barking at the owners door.

Dogs are plural, not needing an apostrophe and the owners shows possession so that does need the apostrophe.

People are just not sure of the rule so they just put them anywhere.
