It is recommended that you only leave a tampon in for up to 8 hours. If you leave it in over night you should be okay providing that you are not using an absorbency that is too high for your needs. The risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome increases if you use a higher absorbency tampon that you actually need. Change tampons often and if you sleep in it change is as soon as you get up. If your tampon pulls too much coming out and is mostly still showing cotton then the absorbency is too high. If you notice any of the following symptoms get medical help.

fever, vomiting and diarrhea, confusion, headache, rash
achy muscles

I think there are more symptoms too. If it makes you nervous don't sleep while using a tampon.

Tampon Overnight

You can sleep in a tampon if you want to. Just make sure that you put a clean one in before you go to bed and when you get up the next morning, first thing you do is change it and you will be fine.

I done that for years, the whole time that I had my period. On my heavy times, I would wear a tampon and a pad. I never did have a problem with mine. Plus I always keep my self clean.

And another thing, the slightest sign of infection I would get my infection killer out and kill my infection with in 2-4 hours of the first sign. It is not the normal infections killers that are out there either. But it is very cheap, and works so fast.

hannah has it backwards, TSS is more likely to occur when you DON'T fill the tampon fast enough. As an example(neither are ideal situations), if you wore a light for 12 hours but it was saturated after 6 you'd be less likely to get TSS than if you wore a super for 10 hours and didn't completely saturate it.

It's perfectly safe, but it should be fresh when you go to bed and come out as soon as you get up. Toxic Shock Syndrome is a risk, but just make sure you are using the right absorbency and don't use the same tampon for much more than eight hours.

It could potentially put you at risk for toxic shock syndrome and other kinds of infection but I would recommend talking to your dr first to see what they think.

I used to wear tampons until I ended up with medical problems unrelated to the tampon itself.

You have an increased chance of getting TSS. I'm not sure how, but oddly enough my dad had it? From what I know, which is not details and he almost died (really not to scare you, seriously, just information) he spent 3 weeks in the hospital and almost 4 months recovering. So nothing happens in one night most likely, but to be on the safe side I highly recommend just wearing the pad.

usually nothing but it can be dangerous. just don't let it happen all the time. It is reccomended to use panty liners or pads during the night, but I use tampons all the time and haven't had any problems, but I also have a very small blood flow amount. for now, don't do it again and ask your dr.

I always leave mine in over night becuase I can't stand pads. I just make sure I change it right before I go to bed and I wake up early to change it again. The only thing that could happen is T.S.S. which is unlikley, but still it could happen. I had a friend who left it in for 3 days becuase their period wasn't heavy. Kind of gross I know lol but she didn't die or get an infection.
