I have a non hormonal Iud, after having sex i sometimes bleed, and get cramp similar to period pain but not as painful (although i do get mega period pain), i also have sometimes noticed a smell a few days after the bleeding and cramps, should i get it removed. I am reluctant to have it removed as i like the security of knowing it is an effective contraceptive and before i had it in i used to get much worse period pains and heavier periods than i do now, i used to be prescribed Mefanamic Acid and even double doses of this wouldnt ease the pain much, this was every period, whereas now they are usually manageable, with only the odd one being this severe.

I would definitely recommend checking with your dr to see what they think.

With your symptoms I suspect your doctor would recommend removal of the IUD. You should also talk to your medic about alternative forms of contraception that would suit your lifestyle. The IUD is quite crude relative to some of the other long term solutions. You might find there is a much better solution - but you need to ask first!
