Further info on what "Geoff G" said,

From the book, The Lawnchair Astronomer.

URANUS COULD HAVE BEEN A GEORGE

When Uranus was first found, its discoverer, Sir William Herschel wanted the planet to be named Georgium Sidus or Georgian Star, after the king of England at the time, George III. Many French astronomers referred to it simply as Herschel and it wasn’t until later on when Johann Bode (1747—1826) proposed it be named Uranus after the mythological father of Saturn.

Mark Lenard (Who played Spock's father on Star Trek; and also narrated the program "Amazing Space".) pronounces it is urine-us.
However, the most common pronunciation seems to be ur-anus.

well. this was such a conflict in our science class.

according to the teacher, it's Ur-ah-nuhs. but we think she's either bi or lesbian..so she might be uncomfortable talking about "uranus" .

but...most people i know have said uranus.

You just can't win with this one. The preferred pronunciation is urine-ous, but many pronounce it your-anus. Maybe we should go back to Herschel's original proposed name: George's Star.

I just looked in my dictionary, and it agrees with the last answer, but gives us an out: the original Greek pronunciation is ooranus. No urine, no anus!

Either pronunciation is acceptable. The second one is used by people who don't want to say "your anus" and have the children snicker, or worse, start cracking anus jokes. (pardon the pun)
