I have lots of fish and tanks! An addiction, more of the hardy type, guppies, platies, bettas, simple fish, I reccently bought a 36 gallon tank and was thinking of getting 3 black mollies 1 male 2 female, Iv read somewhere that they get ich or whitespot easily, Is this true, And are they as hardy and easy to care for as guppies and platies, And do they require Salt in the water?, Thanks

They are more susceptable to white spot, they are better off in a salt envioroment however once you've bred them you can start to reduce the amount of salt slowly on each brood and your fish will start to become a little more resistant. A dose of methylene blue once in awhile removing charcoal may help you.
As for hardy I've not kept them for about 30 years now they used to be really good fish but the far east breeders have turned them almost into marine fish with the amount of salt they use, guppies are going the same way.

It is TRUE that mollies get ich anf fungus. They should be put in a tank with 1 table spoon of salt for every gallon. Guppies and Platies don't really need salt in their water, try not to have a pH of lower than 6.8.

Mollies don't get very big, so you can put more than that into a 36 gallon -- but then hey , more the better! I never had ick problems with my mollies, and with a big tank that is filtered, you are probably going to be just fine.

Mollies don't require salt, but they prefer it.

They come from places where sea water and freshwater mix.

I don't think they are more prone to ick than any other fish.
