So I have to write a paper for a class and one of the main questions in the paper is: What is marriage, most fundamentally, for?

I would just like to know what others think about this question and get an idea of what you think.

Answer if you're married, single, divorced, what have you. Or even if you think there is no fundamental purpose, tell me why.

Thanks! :)

While I do enjoy the romantic aspects of marriage, it seems to me the legal aspects are more noteworthy. We share insurance, bills, he is my next of kin... etc.

Choosing someone you want to be legally bound to is a big decision, and it makes sense to do it with someone you love.

What is it "for?"

It is both a personal and a social institution.

It is a way for two people to publically declare their committment for one another.

Granted, people can simply "live together" successfully, but there are certain legal and financial reasons for marriage, too.

Actually, over the years, I have found that most of the people that seem to have "issues" with marriage tend to be people I wouldn't necessarily put much trust in. Many are the kind that need to have one foot in the "back door," so they can bail out at the first sign of difficulty or problems. They're only there for the good times; not the dark times.

Anyone who is truly in love with another, and who takes the time to GET TO KNOW that other person, should have no issues with getting married.

To preserve the religious sanctity of the family and the unity of marriage as described in the Bible and Gods intentions. To use the strength and unity of the marriage and family to instill good family morals and values into our offspring for .generations to come. Even though man is slowly succeeding in destorying marriage thru divorce, its still our basic society structure to ensure our survival to the future. So if mankind is to survive there needs to always be marriages attached with blood families to avoid total chaos, and prevent the totaltakeover by the Devil and evil. Ive been married 28 yrs.

Marriage to me is not just a lifelong committment to eachother but one that lasts forever! It could be a sacred pact between 2 people. It's always knowing that you are not alone, you have a partner who is always going to be there for you no matter what! He/she will change your life for the better. I have been married almost a year and it has been the best experience yet...I know I still have a lot to learn and to go through but I know in my heart it was the right one.

I'm married (wife).

God summed it up pretty well: "It is not good that Man should be alone." So he made for Man a perfect counterpart, one that would perpetually intrigue him, and would challenge him with her frustrating differences. But for all our differences as men and women, the message is the same: we're all the same on the inside. None of us wants to be alone and lonely as we're stuck here inside our own bodies and inside our own heads. So God gave us companions to share the journey...because it's a helluva long road to walk alone.

So that's why weddings are such a big to-do. It's these two people saying, "Look! I have found a friend and I love him. My love for him is overflowing and I want everyone to share this joy with me. I want the world to witness my solemn vow to always be his friend. I want you all to celebrate our good fortune with us! "

My husband is my best friend. I love him more than anything. I love him enough that I don't care if he loves me back. I just want him to be happy. The magic happens when the one you give this gift of love to, loves you the same in return. Marriage doesn't exist merely for procreation. Procreation exists so that we can perpetuate love, as we give birth to new lives ripe with the potential for feeling the love that we have felt ourselves. There is nothing greater on this earth than this sacred bond between two people.
