Please be more specific as Africa is a huge continent with more than 50 countries.
Some answers are completely incorrect if assuming that woman have no rights. For example: In South Africa woman have many rights (more than most people) believe it or not. The MAJORITY of ministers in government are woman!
This is partly because of affirmitive action in which "previously disadvantaged" are empowered, especially black woman.
The main problem here (and a huge one) is that violence against woman has increased dramaticaly. The chiief reason being that men suddenly feel threatened in the workplace and at home, since woman are immancipated and suddenly threaten the MILLENIA old hierarchy of the man being the head of the family and breadwinner.
Suddenly things get thrown on their heads overnight,in a decade after 1995, after thousands of years since the dawn of man.
An PERFECT example from the constitution of SA mirrors George Orwell's Animal Farm: "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others":
9. Equality
Everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benefit of the law.
Equality includes the full and equal enjoyment of all rights and freedoms. To promote the achievement of equality, legislative and other measures designed to protect or advance persons, or categories of persons, disadvantaged by unfair discrimination may be taken.
Discrimination on one or more of the grounds listed in subsection (3) is unfair unless it is established that the discrimination is fair."
I kid you not...
Think about it...

You'll have to be more specific. It depends on the region, the race of the individuals involved, and the income and education level of those involved. For more information, I suggest you look into some of the work of Prof. Uche Ewelukwa, of the University of Arkansas School of Law. She has focused a lot of study into human rights and domestic issues in Africa.

My views on domestic violence in Africa are no different than my views on it anywhere else.
It's a terrible thing.

It's sad but in Africa a woman has no rights; she is just a property like a dog or a cow. They are raped, abused, infected with HIV and killed and no-one do anything about it.
