Before the 2006 election, Republicans controlled the White House, both houses on Congress, and had a majority on the Supreme Court. Why not ban abortion? The Supreme Court would have upheld the ban and overturned Roe v. Wade.

Could it be the Republicans need to keep abortion legal to keep the evangelical voters worked up?

And why aren't the evangelicals screaming about this? Wasn't this a huge betrayal by the Republican leaders?

Tom, the Supreme Court cannot overturn a previous ruling unless a new case comes before it that challenges that ruling. Congress absolutely can pass such a law, even if they think it will likely be struck down.

Wolf, there was a Republican majority in both the House and Senate before the 2006 election. All you need to pass a law is a simple majority, 50% + 1 vote (or a tie in the Senate, which would be broken by the Vice President). How sad for you that you didn't know this.

That's one of my big questions as a conservative. They had all the marbles prior to 2006 and managed to get very little done with it. I don't know the specifics, but I'm unhappy with it.

However, regarding the evangelical vote, I don't smell conspiracy. I only smell incompetence.

It's like Bernard Goldberg says. The left lost its mind, and the right lost its nerve.

I've been participating in politics for thirty five years and I'm still waiting for the republican party do anything other than to make life easier for business owners. They just had six years of complete control of government and abortion is still legal and will continue to be legal. Roe v. Wade will never be overturned, it has stood too long as law for the Supreme Court to overturn it even if it is brought in front of the court by a state. It's another one of those hot button issues to rally the base to vote republican. How many years will it take for republicans to realize it just won't happen?

The congress people can't change Roe v Wade. It is up to the Supreme Court. A case must come in front of the justices of the supreme court and none have. Repubes can't do anything except have the justices overturn Roe v Wade but just cause they are repube majority doesn't mean they are going to rule against case precedence.

If they thought the public wanted it, maybe they would've done it. The majority of the population does not want abortion outlawed.

The evangelicals aren't screaming because while it may not seem morally right to them, they may not necessarily want to outlaw it because there are cases like rape etc. where a woman could get pregnant and if outlawed, she would be forced to have the baby.

No, the final courtroom desperate no count if it somewhat is criminal or not. nearly all of human beings are professional decision and subsequently a ultimate courtroom appointee won't get by who's professional-life. If there have been a majority of scj's who have been professional-life and regulation have been given replaced, there could be a lot of protests until it have been given reviewed and adjusted returned.

Hey Skippy, in order for abortion to be outlawed, the Supreme Court will have to overturn Roe v Wade first. Secondly, a state will probably do it first and let it go up to the Supreme Court.

You and your red neck colleagues are so stupid. Now why would they want to do something as bad as that? Abortion will never be banned because it is a violation of privacy. They don't outlaw NASCAR and hunting and fishing and pre-determined wars. I'm glad abortion is legal and will probably stay that way. Abortion on demand I say. It is necessary when a girl has sex and doesn't want a baby. That is what abortions are for. Hoorah!

The Republicans are manipulating people to keep them in power. They say they're going to outlaw abortion to gain the support and votes of the people and once they gain that support and votes, they don't follow through. They're inebriated with power, corrupt to the bones! It's ignominious!

all i have to say is that a fetus is a living citizen who has rights as it enters this world... Republicans are becoming more liberal as they want majority to support them. Man if Ron
Paul ever gets to be president he'll overturn Roe Vs. Wade
and stop people from this absurdity.

First of all, they had no majority on the supreme court and they tried with that bill on partial birth abortion. It was stalled by leftwing lawsuits.
