It is common for Swing, Lindy Hop and alike.
Also, any partner dance that's danced for a show can involve this kind of lift, as long as it is done in a way that fits the style. I have seen it in professional showcases of Latin dances. Also could be a part of a Contemporary routine.

It can be done in Lindy or Jitterbug but this is something you should only do if you have a very good instructor. A person lifting his partner can drop her or hurt your back if you do the lift incorrectly.
All social swing ballrooms dances that I know of do not allow any kind of lifts,
In addittion it is dangerous to those dancing around you,
I am not saying you should not try to learn it. just be aware of the risks and find a good instructor,
I really can't say anything about ballet or other styles of dance where there are lifts.

I believe it's OK if all of the 4 (or extra) persons worried are joyful. The suggestion is to boost uninteresting lives, but it surely can result in needless comparisons and competitions. What begins as a pleasure pastime will have to no longer result in mental disorders.
